Beginning with learning how to mix colours and apply paint with controlled brush strokes we create TARGETS. This gives us the confidence to paint simple images such as FISH, which allows for experimentation and fun! Then its on to FACES with a limited palette, soon adding contrasting colours, and before too long we're painting our own BYZANTINE ICONS...
Living in the tropics means being surrounded by exotic plants and flowers of intense colour and infinite form. Fruit is abundant and vibrant, and when examined closely reveals awesome patterns and details. There is always beauty and inspiration. We are further inspired by looking at the work of Georgia O'Keefe, Van Gogh and many others.
Being able to draw is in the eye, and the eye needs to be trained to see . Drawing and painting still lifes is a good place to start, and allows for playing with color and experimenting with mark-making, always a fun thing to do. As our ability to 'see' grows, working with a live model takes the challenge up a few notches and forces us to look objectively. It is demanding but rewarding, and has the added benefit of opening our eyes to life around us out of the art class.
Jamaica is a land of great variety, from the flat savannah lands of St Elizabeth to the soaring peaks of the Blue Mountains to the fertile green pastures of St Mary and St Ann. Everywhere you go you see breathtaking beauty, and around every corner is another scene that's waiting to be painted. And so from our veranda in Kingston we study how to paint a convincing landscape, how to evoke the history of an old cut-stone church with sensitivity, how to invite the viewer into a landscape that's also a soulscape...
