Young at Art is an art education program founded and run by Fiona Godfrey, an Irish artist who came to Jamaica for one year almost 25 years ago …she never left, and has been teaching art ever since.
Over the years the experience of creating art has taken on a life of its own. It has found a multitude of expressions: disadvantaged boys learn to read by drawing; teenagers learn why the fish of the Caribbean are endangered by painting them; women explore the lives of other artists past and present, and thereby explore their own.
Today, classes meet once a week in a leafy garden in the foothills of Kingston.
Women meet from 9am - 12:30pm, and kids come after school for a 2-hour class.
An exhibition of the work is hung annually, and an ever-growing community of people who love art and love making it gather to celebrate and share the journey they are on together.
